Heavy Rain Move Edition Hands-On Impressions

Part of the reason we loved Heavy Rain so much when it launched earlier this year was because of its intuitive control scheme. Interaction with the games story comes in the form of a non-traditional scheme, one that shuns conventional models for a stylized and sophisticated scheme which was intriguing as it was best befitting of the game. Primary interactions in this world lie in the series of button prompts and quick time events embedded in the game. The PS3’s often ignored Sixaxis functionality was also used to great effect in the game. There’s no mindless button bashing in Heavy Rain, only direct, creative and comprehensive button play. Those of you well versed with the traditional Playstation Dual Shock genuinely had to look down at your pad to ‘think’ about how you’re going to make your fingers adjust to certain positions. Without these controls, Heavy Rain would not have worked as well as it did. Playing the game for 20 minutes using the Playstation Move controller adds an extra layer to the Heavy Rain experience and genuinely raises the game’s interactive capacity up a notch.

Heavy Rain Shifts A Million Copies In 5 Weeks!

Don’t be depressed anymore Ethan. Your a million selling superstar. Heavy Rain is a gorgeous game and it looks like it’s been recognised by the buying public. Sony has just dropped us a press release to announce that the game has sold a million copies in the five week period it has been available at retail. Given that the game is a new IP and that it’s quite a difficult title to put into any kind of genre, Quantic Dreams should be thrilled with the quick success of the title. Here’s the PR from Sony and here’s to another million.

Heavy Rain™ sells over one million copies in just five weeks

PlayStation®3’s gripping and unique crime thriller matches its rave reviews
with a stunning sales achievement across the globe

Dublin, 13th April 2010: Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) has announced the millionth sale of Heavy Rain™ for PlayStation®3 (PS3™) worldwide – just five weeks after its launch at the end of February. The game has become an overnight sensation for its combination of gripping plot, thought-provoking themes and emotional involvement. The critics are raving about the new possibilities in emotive, open-ended play and cinematic gaming that Heavy Rain delivers. Now, just five weeks in, the sales figures show that more than a million gamers agree with them. Years in the making, developer David Cage’s hugely innovative and ambitious project has paid off.

“It has been hugely gratifying to see the positive response that Heavy Rain has received from gamers” says David Cage, the Writer and Director of Heavy Rain and CEO of Quantic Dream. “It shows that it is possible to create games that break with convention, games that seek to tell complex stories, and games that can inspire unexpected emotions in players — and that such games can be commercial as well as critical successes. I hope that this success will continue to help pave the way for new, groundbreaking experiences.”

“It’s a stunning achievement – not least because Heavy Rain is not a traditional blockbuster game,” says Mark Hardy, European Product Marketing Director at SCEE. “It’s a blend of gaming, drama and cinema – groundbreaking and utterly immersive for players – that defies the normal rules and lets you shape the story you play. It’s been wonderful to hear the reviewers admiring the game’s ambitiousness; however, the real delight has been in seeing the gamers taking Heavy Rain to their hearts so quickly. It shows that gamers are ready for more: more interactivity, more choice in how to play and more of the open-ended gaming experiences that only PlayStation is delivering.”

Set in a grimy, rain-soaked and fear-ridden town on the east coast of the USA where young sons are going missing, Heavy Rain is a dark and utterly absorbing thriller where you set the rules and where the buck stops with you. With a killer on the loose and time running out, you must decide how far you’ll go to track him down. You get to play as a combination of four characters, each with their own demons to battle and their own roles to play in cracking the case. The magic is in the flexibility of the story – you don’t just play it; you shape it. The decisions you make at key points can send the plot spinning off in entirely unexpected directions and change the story completely. Your path through the dark and unsettling world of Heavy Rain changes according to how you handle things – and you’ll never play the same game twice.

Developed by the renowned Quantic Dream exclusively for PS3, the million-selling Heavy Rain is in stores now.

Heavy Rain Banned In The United Arab Emirates!

by Shane Willoughby - on Feb 22nd 2010 at 2:09 pm (IST). This post has No Comments

Word on the web this morning is that Quantic Dreams’ PS3 Exclusive Heavy Rain (out this Friday) is banned from release in the United Arab Emirates. This is the second high profile title to be banned there in last few months, the first of which was THQ’s Darksiders. Sony commented on the ban via Kotaku;

“The UAE’s National Media Council (NMC) has banned Heavy Rain on PlayStation3. Heavy Rain has an 18+ PEGI rating and has been conceived from the earliest stages as a genuinely adult experience. This means that it deals with strong content including blood and nudity, but treats this content in a mature and sensitive manner. The game is not intentionally controversial or sensationalist, and all the themes and content are consistent with what consumers would expect to see in a mainstream Hollywood thriller.”

It’s a real shame to hear this kind of news. Heavy Rain is a really unique gaming experience that needs to be played to be understood. You’ll be able to read the TGL review in the next couple of days prior to the games Irish release.

Heavy Rain Getting A Motion Controller Announcement Soon!

by Shane Willoughby - on Feb 15th 2010 at 9:34 pm (IST). This post has No Comments

Interesting one this. David Cage of Heavy Rain’s Quantic Dreams has a PS3 Motion Controller announcement up his sleeve. In fact, hes going to make a public announcement about it in the next couple of weeks. It looks like Heavy Rain could be getting some kind of motion controller patch.

In an interview with Dagbladet, Cage spoke about how motion controls were initially part of the Heavy Rain puzzle.

“If you are talking about Motion Control, this is something we initially considered for Heavy Rain.”

“The very first version of the game design was based on motion control, but it was not feasible at the time. But all the controls of the final version of Heavy Rain is still based on motion.”

Obviously, Heavy Rain does something that too many PS3 games are afraid to do, that is, use SIXAXIS. But it looks like SIXAXIS soon might be joined by Sony’s as yet un-named motion controller.

“I have a lot of interest in Sony’s motion device and there is a good chance that we announce something about it in the coming weeks,” Cage remarked.
