Subtle Sony. Subtle………..

With Microsoft’s Kinect less than 24 hours away from release in North America, Sony has released a video detailing the history and evolution of the humble EyeToy. The video just goes to dhow just how ahead of it’s time the Eyetoy really was. It really makes you think. Watch it and wonder why Kinect costs €150.

New Playstation Move Tech Demo Video

by Shane Willoughby - on Aug 29th 2010 at 3:15 am (IST). This post has No Comments

I love Anton Mikhailov. He works at research and development over at Playstation HQ and has becoming something of an unofficial ambassador for the Playstation Move motion controller. Hes smart and has a cool job. Why can’t I be more like him?

Anyway……….over on the US PS Blog, theres a new video of Anton today showing off the Move and a bunch of tech demo stuff that hes been working on. Some of these you’ve seen before. Some you probably havent.

What makes the blog post even more interesting is the little dig at Microsoft’s Kinect and the confusion as to whether or not it works properly while your sitting down.

“You’ll notice that Anton was comfortably sitting on a couch when using the PlayStation Move controllers and the PlayStation Eye never reacted negatively to its reflection from our wall of monitors. These aren’t gesture triggering animations, folks, but true 1:1 gameplay.”

Subtle Sony, subtle…..

It's Official! Sony's Motion Controller Is 'Playstation Move'!

by Shane Willoughby - on Mar 11th 2010 at 1:09 am (IST). This post has 2 Comments

It’s official. Sony has just confirmed in the last couple of minutes that it’s forthcoming motion controller will be called ‘Playstation Move’.

At it’s GDC 2010 keynote reveal, Sony’s Peter Dille announced that “previous motion devices have used controller simply as pointer of mouse — ours becomes an extension of your body.”

“We’re approaching this like a virtual platform launch,” Dille continued, explaining that the Move would be available by itself, with the PlayStation Eye camera, which it will work in conjunction with, and as part of a special forthcoming PlayStation 3 bundle.

Dille did’nt give any real pricing details away but the Move bundle with the PlayStation Eye and a game would be priced at just under $100. That’s about let’s say €75 to you and me folks.

During the keynote, Sony showed off a number of demos as well as first party titles such as Little Big planet and Socom 4. Socom 4 it appears will fully support the Move as well as it’s sub-controller. The Move is being supported by 36 third party firms will support the controller. That and 20 first party Move titles will be available by years end. All of that and they even mentioned that 3D Gaming would be supported this summer.

No concrete release date was mentioned.

Stay tuned, we will bring you up to date information, screens and video of the controller as we get them.

So what do you think? Will you be tempted to buy a ‘Move’?

Sony’s Motion Controller Officially Delayed!

by Shane Willoughby - on Jan 20th 2010 at 5:14 pm (IST). This post has No Comments

Sony has released the not so surprising news that its forthcoming motion controller (believed to be named ‘Arc’) is going to be delayed. The controller was originally meant to tentatively ship in ‘Spring 2010’ but Sony head honcho Kaz Hirai has confirmed that we won’t now see it until the ‘fall’.
“We have decided to release the Motion Controller in fall 2010 when we will be able to offer an exciting and varied line-up of software titles that will deliver the new entertainment experience to PS3 users,” says Kaz.
“We will continue to work to have a comprehensive portfolio of attractive and innovative games for the Motion Controller, not only from SCE Worldwide Studios but also from the third party developers and publishers, whom we have been working closely with. We look forward to soon unveiling the exciting software line-up that further expand and define the PS3 platform as the ultimate entertainment system for the home”.

This delay is a real shame especially since Resident Evil 5’s Gold Edition, which supports the controller, is out in March. Still, the delay isn’t the most surprising thing we’ve ever heard here. It looks like its fall release is going to directly lock horns with Microsoft’s Project Natal launch. 2010 looks like a battle to the death between Sony and Microsoft’s unconventional motion controllers. Bring it.

Sony’s Motion Controller is called ‘Arc’?!

by Shane Willoughby - on Jan 19th 2010 at 11:05 am (IST). This post has No Comments

VG247 is running a post where they claim to have it on ‘good authority’ that Sony’s as yet unnamed motion controller is actually named ‘Arc’. The information comes to VG247 from a concrete source speaking under conditions of strict anonymity. No other information is given at this time. Sony has already responded with the classic mandatory, “We don’t comment on rumour or speculation.”

So ‘Arc’?! Could it be the name? What do you think of ‘Arc’ as a potential name?

Sony’s Motion Controller will be called ‘GEM’ ?

by Shane Willoughby - on Dec 10th 2009 at 4:17 pm (IST). This post has No Comments

It looks like EA may well have let the cat out of the bag and have accidentally mentioned the super secret name of the much talked about Sony Motion Controller. Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitirello name dropped ‘GEM’ at the 37th Annual Global Media Conference held in New York this morning. IGN posted Mr. Riccitiellos exact words. He said,

“In the coming year, both Sony and Microsoft have announced new controllers. Motion sensor controls, Natal and Gem, these are likely to bring new consumers into the marketplace.”

Is Riccitirello right? Did he give away the name with this slip of the tongue? TGL aren’t convinced but ‘GEM’, ‘G.E.M’ or even ‘Jem’ for that matter could actually be the titles. Riccitirello sounds pretty definite and conclusive with that statement. Sony has already responded and told IGN, “No official name for the PlayStation motion controller has been announced.”

So what to you think of Gem? Is it a good name for Sony’s Motion Controller? Thoughts and comments below please.

EyePet Review

by Shane Willoughby - on Nov 25th 2009 at 5:25 pm (IST). This post has No Comments

You can’t help but love this little guy. Eyepet is whatever you want him to be. He’s a little furry monkey, dog, cat hybrid thing that’s gorgeous, loveable and appropriately rendered with sugar, spice and everything that’s nice. The game allows you to hatch and essentially raise, interact and play with your own EyePet and the game relies almost entirely on interactivity through the Playstation Eye camera. You begin in a kind of tutorial mode where an annoying as hell professor type guy takes you through the steps of setting up the PS Eye and the environment in your living room or bedroom for where your Eyepet will running around. Your pet will then need your help to ‘hatch’ before you give him his own name and identity essentially. It’s all very cute, cuddly and cartoony, while all the way interacting with the camera to help your pet take his first step. It is quite novel and its very fun. EyePet is beautifully rendered and he runs and jumps full of the joys of this world and is very enthused by what’s going on around him i.e. you waving your arms, petting him, coaxing him to chase your hand or jump around and play with him.
