Valve’s Gabe Newell has finally opened up about Half-Life 3/Episode 3….kinda. Newell told the Seven Day Cooldown podcast that unexpected results, both positive and negative, seem to be effecting the development of Ricochet 2, except Newell isn’t talking about Ricochet, he’s almost certainly talking about the next Half-Life.

The presenter of the Podcast rather cheekily asked Gabethe following question, alluding to Half-Life 3, but instead name dropping Ricochet 2, a game that almost certainly isn’t in development:

“My final question, and the question in the back of all your fans’ minds, and everyone has been waiting to ask you for a long time: When we can we expect the release of Ricochet 2?”

Gabe’s answer was surprisingly insightful, referring to difficulties that the studio was/is having with the fictional game and also explaining why Valve has remained silent about it’s development.

“In terms of Ricochet 2, we always have this problem that when we talk about things too far in advance,” Newell said.

“We end up changing our minds as we’re going through and developing stuff, so as we’re thinking through the giant story arc which is Ricochet 2, you might get to a point where you’re saying something is surprising us in a positive way and something is surprising us in a negative way, and, you know, we’d like to be super-transparent about the future of Ricochet 2.”

Newell added; “The problem is, we think that the twists and turns that we’re going through would probably drive people more crazy than just being silent about it, until we can be very crisp about what’s happening next.”

It’s been almost five years since Half-Life 2: Episode 2 and Valve has never really actually spoken about a potential sequel. Don’t stop believing.

Thanks to Develop.
