The long winded rumour that Skyrim could contain either a hidden co-op or multiplyer aspect is now officially dead. In an interview with IGN, Bethesda’s Todd Howard confirmed the game is a single player experience (again) and “that [the] dev time is going to take away from doing the best single player game we can”. We can’t say we’re surprised, in fact, we’re slightly relieved if anything. Howard did go on to confirm that there’s two requests that the dev team get from the fans: dragons and multiplayer.
“The two most requested features we get are dragons and multiplayer. We got one of them this time! We always look into multiplayer, put lots of ideas on the whiteboard, and it always loses. It’s not that we don’t like it. I can think of ways it would be a lot of fun, but at the end of the day, that dev time is going to take away from doing the best single player game we can, and that’s where our hearts are.”
Multiplayer in Hammerfell anyone?

Multiplayer would ruin Skyrim to be honest. The only really cool thing would be Co-Op. That would really add to the experience but multiplayer PvP stuff just wouldn’t sit right. That being said I’m one of the few people who prefers single-player RPGs to MMOs
Have to agree dj, I too prefer a single player experience – especially for Skyrim anyway!
Well I wouldn’t mind if they made something like the arena from Oblivion and made that online, battle another player 1v1 or such. But honestly, single player all the way in this type of game.
I’m not a fan of PvP in RPGs because it’s never going to be balanced due to the core mechanic of leveling up. I rarely feel there isn’t room for co-op though – Diablo II & Dungeon Seige were co-op RPGs and they worked great, though understandably a different type of RPG. I’d love to see a co-op mode in a big open world RPG like this, and being able to go questing with a friend – especially with the radiant quest system.
While it would have been awesome to have some online Co-op I can live without it. For me The Elder Scrolls is purely a single player expereince. Lock the doors, pull the curtains, live on tea and bread for 2 months and sleep in your own filth. Perfect.
