UPDATE: Eurogamer have this wrong!

According to Jame Thorpe at Sony you DO get to keep the DLC and add-ons to games that you acquire through Playstion Plus. However, Premium game content will expire when your subscription runs out. An example of Premium game content is the Private Member Club in Playstation Home. This will not be accessible if you cancel your subscription. They hope to bring more content like this in the future. However, your game add-ons/dlc/themes/avatars are safe.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Oh noes. There was a lot of confusion about Playstation Plus in the beginning and thankfully it seemed as though the majority of that confusion was cleared up. James Thorpe from Sony has updated the EU Playstation blog which clarifies to an even greater extend just who owns premium DLC once it’s purchased: and guess what? It’s not you.

As you may already know, the Playstation Plus service offers you the ability to download themes, avatars, games and more and once you are paying for the subscription – all is sweet. A rival to Xbox Live, it has proved to be a big hit but that’s not without controversy. When you download DLC via your Playstation Plus subscription it seems that you don’t actually own the rights to it: meaning once your subscription ends – then the DLC is in fact null. Here’s the details from the Playstation’s EU blog:

James Thorpe (Playstation Network Product Manager): “Now onto the subject of DLC within the Plus schedule. Firstly I just want to apologise if I caused confusion over this issue, that was never my intention.

Here is the current situation within Plus Premium game elements, mentioned in the T’s&C’s (Terms and Conditions) are not referring to DLC. The Private Members Club in PlayStation Home is an example of a premium game element and we are working with developers to try and get you other premium elements in certain games. When we are able to provide these, they will expire if your Plus subscription expires (as stated in the terms of service).

Add-ons are separate to premium game elements. In the original blog-post, I was using the phrase “Add-ons” to refer to extra content, including DLC. Currently, add-ons do not expire when the subscription expires

Premium game elements and add-ons are not part of the core monthly content, I apologies again if my post during the launch of Plus was incorrect, I’m afraid this was just an honest mistake during the hectic launch period of Plus.”

What do you think? Is this fair? Tell us what you think.
