A very interesting video has emerged on YouTube which is said to be leaked tech demonstration footage of ‘Fortress’, the secret Final Fantasy game that developers GRIN were working on before their Swedish studio was closed.
We don’t know anything tangible about ‘Fortress’ but its existence has been rumoured for some time. The video itself shows some of the games visuals, some combat gameplay as well as some concept artwork which features images of everything from scenic landscapes to Chocobos.
William Mark Felt, who hosts the video, includes a very interesting video description. He writes;
“FORTRESS is the codename of an official, but currently unannounced sequel to FINAL FANTASY XII.
It is an action game set some time after the events of FINAL FANTASY XII: REVENANT WINGS, and is intended for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows platforms.
The project was originally developed by GRIN and supervised by Square Enix, but issues between the two companies led to GRIN going bankrupt and Square Enix reclaiming the project from them.
The project has not been officially announced yet, but its existence is known due to information leaked by former members of the development team and sources in the video game industry.
The Fortress project is still supported by Square Enix and in development at a currently undisclosed studio — possibly Eidos Montreal, Square Enix’s main Western branch”.
So it looks like ‘Fortress’ is real and it will officially be billed as the true sequel to Final Fantasy XII. Interesting. Watch the video below for yourself and tell us what you think?

Nostalgia for FFVII-IX put aside I seriously thought FFXII was probably the best FF to date. Superb visuals, lovely character design, fantastic battle system and a story that isn’t as in your face as some shitty Tetsuya Nomura helmed game. Yes, no Tetsuya Nomura no teen angst ridden characters that wear layers and layers of belts with spikey hair.
When I first heard about this it seemed interesting- a FF spin off developed in the west. I really hope that Square don’t poke their noses too much into it and that they still develop it for a western audience.
